Fillings have traditionally been thought of only as functional. You get a cavity in your tooth and a filling is put in. Fairly simple and common. Nowadays, though, your fillings can serve a cosmetic purpose as well. Why settle for metal fillings when you can get fillings that are virtually undetectable? Ones that look like your natural teeth. Dr. Robert Cuckler, our Cutler Bay cosmetic dentist can offer you fillings made from porcelain or composite resins. They are safe, strong, effective, and they match the color of your teeth. They are a wonderful solution when you need to address a new cavity, but they can also be used cosmetically to replace existing metal fillings in your mouth.

The process for replacing your current metal fillings is fairly straightforward. Call us and schedule an appointment with our Cutler Bay cosmetic dentist. Typically, two visits will be needed. First, Dr. Cuckler will remove your old metal filling. He will clean the area and check to see if there is any additional tooth decay. If so, he will remove it. He will then make an impression of your tooth. This will be sent to the dental lab where they will fashion your filing. A temporary onlay will be used to protect your tooth until your second visit. At that time, Dr. Cuckler will remove the temporary onlay, apply conditioning gel, and fit your new filling. He will use bonding cement and a high intensity light to bond it to your tooth. The final step is polishing the tooth.

Which is best for you, porcelain or composite resin? Porcelain resists stains better than composite resins and they can last for 15 years or more. They are, however, more expensive. Composite resins offer most of the same advantages, minus the stain resistance and the longevity, at a more reasonable cost. Both types bond very well to your tooth and usually require less drilling than is needed for metal fillings. Porcelain and composite fillings may not be the best choice for back teeth, which take the brunt of your chewing and where cosmetic concerns are probably not very important. Consult with our Cutler Bay cosmetic dentist to determine which filling is the best for you in each situation.
