When it comes to treating cavities, our Redland FL dentist will first do a comprehensive dental examination to ascertain not only the immediate problem but also the general state of the patient’s dental health. We believe in a collaborative, educational process, so the doctor will discuss your concerns and his findings, explaining all the treatment options available to you. The standard treatment for tooth decay, a cavity, is to remove the decay and infected tooth structure and fill the void with a restorative, a filling. Traditional dental restoratives include porcelain and composite. These fillings are extremely durable and good for use wherever the restored teeth must withstand extreme chewing pressure, such as in the back of the mouth. The oldest type of filling still in use is the amalgam filling, which is a mixture of mercury, silver, tin, copper and sometimes other materials. Amalgams are extremely resistant to wear, easy to use and inexpensive. There has been some concern voiced about the presence of mercury in the amalgam but with over 100 years of continual use and research behind it, the amalgam filling has been proven to be stable and safe. The amalgam fillings are also particularly good for use in molars at the back of the mouth due to their durability.
Our Redland FL dentist also uses what are called composite fillings, which are a mixture of glass or quartz fillers in a resin medium. These fillings are tooth colored, so they are less noticeable in our patient’s mouths. The composite fillings work well where there is moderate chewing pressure such as the teeth at the front of the mouth, and in small-to-mid size restorations. These fillings can also be bonded into place and generally require a smaller repair than amalgams. Our practice will recommend the type of restorative that works best with the repair needed by your particular case. Please make an appointment with our office for a checkup.
